Expense tracking that actually lasts past February

A lot of people start tracking expenses in January and stop in February. That is rarely a discipline problem. It is that the method chosen demands daily work in exchange for a result you look at once a month.

The three methods people actually use

Each trades detail against effort, and the trade is what decides whether you are still doing it in June.

MethodEffortWhere it breaks
Logging in a notes appEvery purchaseTwo missed days and the totals are wrong, so you stop
SpreadsheetWeeklyTyping figures by hand across several accounts
From bank statementsMonthlyCash spending does not appear

Why logging every purchase does not hold

Manual logging needs near-perfect consistency. Miss a few days and the totals no longer match reality, and numbers you do not trust are not interesting enough to bring you back. The cycle ends the same way almost every time.

Meanwhile the most accurate record already exists. Your bank logged every card payment and transfer without being asked. What is missing is not the data, it is turning it into something readable.

A starting point

  • Download three months of history from the account you spend from most
  • Sort transactions into broad groups first, like food, transport and housing. Detail can wait
  • Look at your top three categories. At least one is usually not what you expected
  • Set a budget only for the category you actually intend to change. Budgeting everything at once rarely survives

How detailed should categories be

Less than you think. Ten to fifteen categories answer almost every question worth asking. Splitting coffee shops out from restaurants helps only if you intend to act on the difference. Otherwise it is just more sorting.

ThaiWealth AI reads your statement and categorises the transactions for you. Correct one and it remembers that merchant, so the same shop is right next time.
